Available Workshop Topics

StarLab - Grades K-8

As students step inside this portable planetarium, the environment immediately inspires them. The flexibility of our lessons, from navigation to constellations to planets, reaches learners of all types. Some of the most common misconceptions in science revolve around earth and space, and Starlab provides a way to make these abstract concepts real.

Fossils Rock! - Grades preK-5

In this WOW, students go back in time and use scientific inquiry to discover the world of the dinosaurs. Students will gain a new understanding of the food web. They will also investigate and categorize fossils and discover the challenges of paleontology on their own archaeological dig.

Chemistry - Grades 3-8

What is the difference between a chemical and physical change? Students explore the 'WOW!' in chemistry used everyday. Participants will walk through paper while exploring what a physical change can do, then investigate chemical changes with a combination of exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities. This workshop includes elephant's toothpaste and Alka-Seltzer rockets- great activities for classes of any age!

Structures - Grades K-8

Discover the secrets of building big and investigate the forces constantly pulling, pushing and twisting on all structures. Participants will examine the forces of tension, compression, and torsion through a variety of building activities, then explore how the shape of a structure can react to these forces. Learners will then be challenged to build a variety of structures, including towers and geodesic domes, with an inspiring array of materials!

Newton’s Roller Coasters - Grades 2-10

In this action-packed program, students experiment with velocity, momentum, acceleration, mass and gravity before building their own scream machines! Students explore Newton's ideas about roller coasters and use simple materials to experiment with their own ideas. Participants will work in teams to challenge each other and themselves while learning about the difficulties of engineering their own thrill rides!

Flight - Grades 2-6

Discover the four forces of flight- lift, drag, thrust and gravity! Participants will examine the Bernoulli principle, air resistance and pressure while trying to work within the constraints of the natural world to design, build, test, and redesign a variety of flying machines!

Kohl's Kids in Action - Grades K-5

Included FREE with every Workshop

  • All program materials
  • Teacher's Curriculum guide
  • Pre and post visit activities

Participants will expand their understanding of what their bodies need to function, and become more empowered to make their own choices! Use the calorie fountain to learn how exercise patterns and food intake affect weight. Compare foods for nutritional value - what foods make the best choices and why? Students try to match their own resting pulse rate with a heart pump- and discover what a challenge it is to beat 100,000 times a day! Race a healthy heart and a heart with clogged arteries to see which moves liquid faster and why. Aligned to National Health Science Standards.

Global Warming & Alternative Energy - Grades 1-10

Alternative energy has become an increasingly important topic in this country and around the world. In this WOW, students will explore the concepts of potential and kinetic energy and the use of sunlight for power. A COSI educator will even create a cloud in your classroom! This workshop informs students about the importance of being good stewards of the planet.
